Augusta is Maine's state capital and the seat of Kennebec County, situated on the Kennebec River midway between Portland and Bangor. The Maine State Capitol, constructed of Hallowell granite and completed in 1832, anchors the downtown alongside the Maine State Museum, the Maine State Library, and Arsenal Park, a riverside green space along the Kennebec. The Kennebec River Rail Trail offers paved walking and cycling access along the waterfront, and the downtown has seen renewed restaurant and retail activity in recent years. Housing includes historic Federal and Colonial-style homes on the east side of the river, mid-century single-family neighborhoods, and new construction on the city's western edge along the Route 3 corridor.
